This large, open parkland with many splendid trees, is notable for its Winter Garden (a magnificent hothouse), containing tropical trees and plants from around the world. It was built by Colonel North, who used to own Avery Hill Park, and although it is not anywhere near what it used to be, and in need of serious restoration and maintenance, it's still just the place on a chilly winter day. Look at the exotic plants as you move through the temperate area into the tropical house with it's beautiful statue.
The park divides the Southwood site campus of the University of Greenwich from the Mansion site. There are also gardens adjacent, affording a pleasant place to sit and relax.
The Friends of Avery Hill Park help Royal Greenwich oversee the maitenance and use of the park.
