Pyramid Scheme Scam - Eltham West Team
12th, November 2015

Secret Sister Gift Exchange’ Pyramid Scheme Scam

Royal Greenwich Trading Standards are warning residents about a festive pyramid scheme scam that's appearing on social media like Facebook.

The 'Secret Sister Gift Exchange' promise participants 36 gifts in exchange for a single small investment.

Pyramid selling schemes like this one are mathematically impossible and are illegal in the UK.

Those who start these schemes or enter in the second round might stand a small chance of actually receiving something such as a gift - but it's almost impossible for those who join later to ever reach the top, and as the scheme fizzles out, they receive nothing in return.

There is also another pyramid scheme circulating at the moment which is virtually identical to the ‘Secret Sister Gift Exchange’ but involves purchasing childrens’ books instead of gifts.

Our advice to residents is that these schemes may appear fun and festive, they are scams at heart, and should be avoided.

If you, or anyone you know, have been affected by this fraud, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk

HMRC PRIZE WINNINGS SCAM - Middle Park and Sutcliffe Team
23rd, August 2015

Royal Greenwich Trading Standards are warning residents about a recent scam where fraudsters cold called a resident claiming they were from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) which was untrue.

The scammer told the resident that their prize winnings were at a London airport depot and to release the winnings, the resident needed to pay them £4300 to cover capital gains tax.

When the resident said they didn’t have that kind of money, the scammer said they could instead pay £1150.

The scammers went on to say that an insurance company were ready to cover delivery of the winnings and claimed they had already cleared this with the residents’ bank who were waiting for the winnings to be cashed.

REMEMBER – to protect yourself from scams, do NOT pass personal or banking information to people who cold-call you.

HMRC will never request money from you in this manner.

Illegal Tobacco Alert - Middle Park and Sutcliffe Team
13th, August 2015

Are you aware of people selling illegal tobacco
in the borough?
Are you aware of dealers selling to children and
young people?
If so, Royal Greenwich Trading Standards needs your help!
Many dealers deliberately target children and vulnerable young people –
around half of teenage smokers aged 14-17 will be offered illegal cigarettes
each year – which means they’re more tempted to smoke and more likely to
get hooked.
